This course deepens students’ understanding of client-centered service through the lens of cultural diversity, ethics, and inclusivity. Students explore the history of hairstyling across cultures, Indigenous hair traditions, and the significance of hair in different communities and belief systems. The course also examines gender roles in hairstyling and strategies for creating safe, respectful salon spaces for all clients. A final capstone project allows students to research a culture or ethnicity of their choice, investigating its unique hair-related rituals, practices, and meanings. This course fosters ethical, inclusive practices that honor each client’s identity and heritage.
